The mayor of the joint municipality of Uelsen, Hajo Bosch, recently welcomed the winners of the city cycling competition. Numerous committed cyclists took part in the nationwide competition during the three campaign weeks from September 5 to 25.
Under the motto of doing something for the climate and their own health, the participants covered many kilometers by bike - and thus contributed to saving around six tons of CO₂. In total, an impressive 37,601 kilometers were cycled this year - a good 8,500 kilometers more than two years ago.
Together with Heike Lennips from Uelsen Touristik, Mayor Bosch thanked all participants for their efforts. Thanks to the support of several local partners - including the NVB, Volksbank Niedergrafschaft, the Elferink bicycle shop and Sport und Freizeit Kamps - the joint municipality was able to award attractive prizes to some of the active participants.
Carolin Dornieden clocked up the most kilometers this year with an impressive 1,202 kilometers, closely followed by Derk Speet, who covered 1,144 kilometers.
The Catholic parish took first place in the team ranking with a total of 4,689 kilometers. Second place went to the Itterbeck elementary school with 4,041 kilometers.
Once again this year, a special prize was awarded for the college with the most kilometers cycled. This was awarded to the team from the joint municipality of Uelsen. The team donated the corresponding cheque worth 100 euros to the local Blekker Hof.
In addition, three further non-cash prizes were raffled off among all participants.
At the end of the award ceremony, Mayor Bosch appealed to all cycling enthusiasts to take part in the next city cycling campaign in two years' time. An achievable goal can already be set for 2027: to break the 40,000 kilometer mark - and cycle around the equator together.
