On August 20, 2026, the Vechte Flood Partnership was officially founded at the ska sociocultural center in Neuenhaus. Municipalities, counties, water districts, specialized agencies, and Dutch partners intend to work more closely together in the future, exchange experiences, and develop joint measures for flood protection and climate adaptation.
This collaboration is also of great importance to the Uelsen Joint Municipality. Although the joint municipality’s territory borders the Vechte River directly only at a small point, Uelsen is particularly affected by designated floodplains and the challenges they pose.
The new flood partnership is intended to help pool existing expertise, better coordinate planning efforts, and develop joint strategies for sustainable flood protection. Among other things, this involves flood prevention, improving individual preparedness, and further developing and coordinating protective measures.
A particular focus is placed on cross-border cooperation. After all, water and flooding do not stop at municipal or state borders. The involvement of Dutch partners therefore underscores the importance of taking a joint approach to the entire Vechte watershed.
The establishment of the Flood Partnership marked an important step toward even closer cooperation in the region. The Uelsen Joint Municipality will also contribute its experience and insights into the specific challenges posed by the existing floodplains.
